Hackers speaks for itself just in the name. The aim of the game is to build your own 3D virtual network, defend it from other hackers and, in retaliation or just for fun, hack networks of other hackers on a worldwide scale. Players are presented with various hacking tools in the game, which can be upgraded as you progress. Hackers also features a slight story, of sorts, in which the player supports a particular side in a mysterious war – supposedly, a war between the other hackers, though on a much larger scale. Given that you can get missions between security forces, activists or terrorists is sort of a tell-all to the implications of Hackers.
Even if you know little to nothing about actual hacking, Hackers does present a fun and interest strategy game. The methods used to hack others or secure your network are not necessarily accurate, but the fact that they implement the names of real methods such as brute force attacks or more stealthy manners to bypass your enemies is interesting. The fun is in the strategy and matching your wits against other online players, which makes for an enjoyable multiplayer experience.
The main drawbacks to Hackers tends to be in the pacing. Building up a full force attack can take a very long time and sort of breaks the tension of the game. Seeing as Hackers is a game of war, at least in a different manner, not having the tension there is really sort of disappointing. There are occasional issues here and there, but the dev team, Trickster Arts, is clearly good about responding and working with players who experience issues, so no complaints on their part. All in all, it really doesn’t deter from the fun of the game as a whole.
Art and Sound Design
Hackers is a very attractive game, without question. It’s sleek aesthetic and sound design help bring its technical and dangerous atmosphere to life. The design choices lend themselves very well to Hackers overall, and players are sure to feel drawn in.
Hackers is a fun and intriguing take on the strategy genre. It blends very realistic terminology with gorgeous art, a tense sound design and gameplay that is sure to keep players hacking for hours on end. Despite its slow pace, the reward of pitting your wits up against others can become highly addictive and can be as engrossing as it is challenging. Hackers is definitely a win for people wanting to experience hacking on a worldwide scale for themselves.
