Pokemon Duel takes on a mobile version of the card game, to put it in the most basic terms. Players can build a deck of six Pokemon figures that they’ve collected and then pin them up against players from all over the world to see who comes out on top in a League Match. Taking the idea of the card game versus the actual mainstay Nintendo games is definitely an interesting one and Pokemon Duel does a fairly good job of integrating aspects and strategy from both into this fun new entity.
The main problem that Pokemon Duel suffers from is the RNG aka random number generator. Instead of coming down to strategy in most games, you will find yourself at the mercy of luck and chance more often than not. This means you can absolutely be acing a match only to be taken down in the end by one lucky dice throw by the AI or other player. While this doesn’t sound like much of a differentiation from most strategy games here, Pokemon Duel has it in more abundance which can definitely be a bit off-putting for many. Regardless, the overall gameplay itself remains consistently fun and challenging.
Art and Sound Design
Pokemon Duel takes on the style of Pokemon Coliseum and other 3D games in the franchise in how it portrays the action. It is sleek, detailed and looks great during the gameplay. The sound design is also nothing short of what you would expect from the Pokemon series as a whole. It’s not going to set itself totally apart but Pokemon Duel does do a good job of creating its own identity.
For fans of Pokemon, or strategy as a whole, Pokemon Duel might meet with some mixed responses. The RNG issue is the largest problem the game faces at the moment and a lot of players have felt similar frustration at the luck they were dealt. Still, Pokemon fans will find a lot to love. The gameplay, RNG aside, is still fun and exciting, and the art and sound design are definitely right in line with standard Pokemon fame. Give it a try for yourself – you may just find yourself with an all new Pokemon gem.
